About the Lab

The Ecology and Conservation Biogeography Lab of the Faculty of Chemical Biological Sciences of the Autonomous University of Guerrero develops research focused on knowledge of the avifauna of central-southern Mexico, particularly the state of Guerrero. Our investigations are focused on the following:

  • Analyze the spatial and temporal patterns of bird distribution in tropical and humid mountain ecosystems.
  • Analyze the effects of land use change, ecosystem fragmentation, and secondary succession processes on bird structure and vascular plant communities.
  • Study the biotic interactions of important functional groups in ecosystems such as seed dispersal and pollinators and their plant groups, and measure the effect of anthropogenic activities on their interactions and,
  • Prioritize and design protected areas based on systematic conservation planning methods, with a social approach for making decisions that allow the sustainable use and effective biodiversity conservation.

Mission and Vision

Mission

Our mission is to develop innovative scientific research under inter- and multidisciplinary approaches using birds as a study model, to answer complex questions about spatiotemporal patterns, biotic interactions, community structuring in the face of anthropogenic phenomena, and prioritization for biological conservation in the tropics and southern Mexico, with emphasis on the state of Guerrero.

Vision

Our vision is to consolidate ourselves as a leading laboratory in research on birdlife that provides quality knowledge and contributions to its conservation, besides linking the knowledge generated with different social sectors that promote the knowledge and appreciation of our biodiversity, its sustainable use, and effective conservation.

Summary of scientific production

Our research shows relevant information on ecology, biogeography and bird conservation in the southern tropics of Mexico, including some other biological groups.
